The Price of Chanel’s Classic Flap Bag Has Nearly Tripled in the Last Decade

Chanel Medium Classic Flap Bag

Pricing data from the mid-2000s can be hard to come by for any handbag; it’s not the kind of information that brands or stores keep in public archives, and PurseBlog itself was only just getting its start cataloging those sorts of things back in the mid-aughts. When the bags in question have never been sold online at all, the search for data only becomes more difficult, and that makes it all the harder to track the at-times-exorbitant price increases that those bags have received over the past decade. Racked did the dirty work of finding out how much Chanel’s prices have changed, and the result was surprising even to me.

Racked’s Casey Lewis tracked prices for Chanel’s Medium Classic Flap Bag from 2005 to now, and she found that, in 2005, one of the bags could be had for $1,650. Although that’s still an objectively high price for something like a handbag, it now seems impossibly low, considering both the current prices of similar bags from other brands and Chanel’s position in the top price tier for luxury accessories.

The same bag in lambskin now goes for $4,900, according to both Lewis’ research and Chanel’s website, despite the fact that astonishingly few things have changed about this bag since its introduction decades ago. Racked’s experts attribute that to the necessity of keeping the bag exclusive; instead of attracting young customers directly to its marquee accessories, Chanel has chosen to introduce other products at a sub-$1,000 price, like expanded lines of sunglasses and costume jewelry, to capture the next generation of aficionados without making its bags unappealingly ubiquitous.

Based on how Louis Vuitton has suffered of late because of its inescapable (and, arguably, devalued) logo, such attempts are indeed necessary to keep an accessories business healthy, but Chanel bags are not exactly a rare sight, in spite of their high price tags. That is, of course, the central paradox of luxury handbags–selling enough of them to keep the business afloat and please investors while still ensuring that every buyer feels like she’s getting something special and unique.

Chanel doesn’t wholesale to third-party stores or sell its bags anywhere online, so without reducing its production, Chanel is doing just about all it can to funnel its bags toward its ideal customers. Only time will tell how long the strategy can be effective and how many more price increases the market can support for an essentially unchanged product.

Chanel’s Art School Backpack Will Cost $3,400

Chanel-Spring-2014-Backpack

Does the title of this post shock you? Does it even mildly surprise you? And if it does, is it because you thought the Chanel Graffiti Backpack, a standout piece from the brand’s Spring 2014 runway collection, would cost more? Since the price of this piece was unearthed over the weekend, I’ve seen a couple of breathless posts from fashion sites about this bag’s extreme price tag, but it just doesn’t seem that extreme to me.

Yes, $3,400 is a lot of money for almost any handbag. Yes, the price stands in particular contrast to the grungy, DIY aesthetic of this particular bag. But Chanel is a brand that has made$30,000+ pearl-covered seashell minaudieres in the recent past, and it has a customer base that isn’t particularly price-conscious, especially when it comes to getting its collective hands on a very visible runway piece. Those Chanel Lego Clutches cost (start at, really) $10,000 and are constantly sold out everywhere.

Like the ridiculous Chanel Hula Hoop bag, this piece will likely disappear quickly off of store shelves and into the closets of Chanel completists, who will brandish it as though it’s the trophy result of a particularly fashionable hunt. For those customers, $3,400 is a drop in the bucket compared to what similar prize handbags cost, even if it’s a lot of money to most of the world.

Modeled the Givenchy Antigona Small Bag Versus Antigona Mini Bag

Other Brands

It’s been a while since the Givenchy Mini Antigona bag was first released earlier this year. There were some errors when it came to the sizing differences when the bag was first reported in a previous post, which has since been updated.  As a result, here’s a better analysis of the differences between the Givenchy Mini Antigona bag and theGivenchy Small Antigona bag.  Pictured is a side by side comparison of the small and mini when carried to get an idea of the differences in size.    Givenchy Antigona Bag Versus

The most noticeable difference is the length of strap, the mini can be worn cross-body at 37″ in length while the small is similar to the classic Medium size where the strap is only shoulder length at 22″.  The option of carrying the bag cross-body is only available in the mini size.  In additon, there is about a 2.5″ difference in height and width that make the mini substantially smaller than the next largest size. The size measurements in inches show that the Givenchy Antigona Mini is also much closer to aCeline Nano bag (ie. 8″ x 8″).

In terms of features, both do not differ very much other than the variation in the strap as the Mini has an adjustable buckle.  The hardware decoration and interior styling remain relatively the same.

This pink version of the Antigona bag is currently available at Lane Crawford for a limited time. Note that the small size is already sold out in the pink.  Also, the prices listed vary as the listed prices from Lane Crawford include all import duties and taxes to the United States as the store is located in Hong Kong.
