The journey is the destination; getting there is not as important as the experience of going. A new Louis Vuitton advertising campaign conjures the original spirit of travel for the next generation. The allure of the unknown, the thrill of exploration, the wonder of discovery – all are captured in a series of stunning images, shot in South Africa by Peter Lindbergh, styled by Carine Roitfeld, and starring models Karen Elson and Edie Campbell.

Since 1854, Louis Vuitton has defined the art of travel, designing luggage which – with elegance and ingenuity – has accompanied explorers and pioneers, stars and statesmen, and stylish travellers everywhere. It was only natural that, for this new adventure, Louis Vuitton should select its emblematic Monogram canvas, created by Georges Vuitton in 1896, as the perfect travel companion. Supple, lightweight, waterproof, hardwearing and, of course, eternally elegant, the Monogram has travelled the world, gracing so many unfamiliar settings, so many unexpected situations, that it never, ever looks out of place.

On this latest expedition – described by Carine Roitfeld as “a journey to the extremes of elegance” – the two intrepid travellers are accompanied by three iconic Louis Vuitton bags: the Speedy, the Keepall and the Neverfull. Two new designs in the Monogram line are also given their first outing. The structured, ladylike Montaigne bag is a natural choice for Karen Elson, while the more casual Marias bag reflects the bohemian chic of Edie Campbell. Both models carry their bags with the same easy insouciance with which they wear Louis Vuitton’s intricately embellished Spring/Summer 2014 collection in the South African bush – a spirit of freedom that underlines the modernity of this new campaign. Beyond the Monogram, beyond the models, beyond even the beauty of South Africa, its landscapes bathed in the golden light of dawn and dusk favoured by Peter Lindbergh, the star of this campaign is travel itself. Travel as an inspiration, an illumination. Travel as an art. Travel as an endless source of impressions and emotions, memories and moments of grace – three curious giraffes cautiously approaching to observe the shoot; a pair of lion cubs, playful as kittens; Edie Campbell, an accomplished equestrienne, sitting astride a zebra or – in one of the most arresting images of the campaign – perched high on a pile of trunks, almost literally on top of the world. To travel is to live.

The Louis Vuitton Spirit of Travel campaign will break in the April 2014 issues of magazines worldwide, accompanied by a film on digital media and the Louis Vuitton Pass app.

Summer 2014 at Louis Vuitton is a festival of perfect pastels and sweet sorbet shades recalling Slim Aarons’ seductive images of the international jet set in the Sixties and Seventies. Quietly and coolly sophisticated, this is a collection that will stand out on the beach by day and, come the evening, by the pool for cocktails.

For an afternoon by the sea, the season’s essential tote comes in natural linen and cotton canvas with pastel leather trim, or else in Damier Azur. Both versions are printed with the heritage Articles de Voyage signature, and the natural canvas tote is lined with Summer 2014’s tropical flower print.

Sized up or down, in coral, pale yellow or both, this pattern also covers a cotton pareo, a silk square, a beach towel and, naturally, the glamorous zip-front swimsuit or bandeau bikini in which Louis Vuitton’s sophisticate takes her place in the sun.

As cocktail hour approaches, she slips out of her relaxed beach cover-up or crisp cotton shorts into something a little more formal – a fluid viscose floral-print dress, perhaps, or a baby-doll style as blue as the cloudless sky. She swaps her espadrilles for a pair of high-heeled wedges, but keeps the laid-back spirit of denim printed with the Articles de Voyage motif.

For evening, Louis Vuitton’s classic Epi leather in sunset shades of lilac, yellow, pink and coral dresses the neat Louise bag with its tone-on-tone LV initials clasp. Slung across the body on its slender strap, the Louise is casual and carefree. With the strap removed, it transforms into a chic clutch. Matched with strappy flat or wedge- heeled sandals in coral or pale yellow calfskin, the iconic Neverfull in Epi leather epitomizes the mood of easy, breezy elegance that infuses this Summer 2014 collection.

Louis Vuitton L’Aventure Pop-Up Store Opens at Hong Kong Pacific Place

The “L’Aventure” pop-up store, an unprecedented space that highlights Louis Vuitton’s expert authority on travel, opens 4 April 2014 at The Space on 4/F at Louis Vuitton Pacific Place, Hong Kong, offering a selection of luggage in the legendary Monogram canvas, travel accessories, and looks for the modern traveller. From trunk beds destined for expeditions on the African continent to luggage designed to equip half-track vehicles across Asia, adventure is intrinsic to Louis Vuitton.

Designed in a collaboration by Tyler Brûlé with his team, the pop-up store, which has been transported from the prestigious Avenue Montaigne in Paris, France to Hong Kong to accompany great travelers of the modern age who crisscross the globe, is the perfect embodiment of the spirit of adventure. Upon entrance, a bold window display of brightly colored monkeys and LV’s classic trunks and bags dangling from a golden palm tree greets visitors. Inside, a leather hammock is positioned next to potted palms. Eyes are immediately drawn to artist Letman’s boldly colorful illustrated mural, depicting a playful rendition of LV personalization codes – a striking contrast against the store’s warm wood floors and dark wood ceilings. Opposite the mural, vintage trunks are displayed on shelves suspended by cowhide leather straps. Stepping in, you feel as if you’ve entered the golden age of travel, rediscovering a world where travelers think nothing of traversing continents with a dozen trunks.

“L’Aventure pays tribute to the spirit of travel, the thirst for conquering the unknown, and celebrates elegance on the move with tasteful and functional luggage that fulfill the requirements of each new generation of travelers, from the golden age of the ocean liner to the conquest of the air to the advent of the automobile.
